Alix Community Playgrounds Project

The Alix Community Playgrounds Project is a joint venture by the Alix Playground Society and the Alix Agricultural Society with the goal of replacing the aging, unsafe structures at the Alix MAC School and the Alix Lake Recreation Area. Playgrounds are a celebration of childhood, family and community and are a vital part of the play which is essential to the healthy physical and mental development of our children.

Unfortunately, the 23 year old playground equipment at the Alix MAC School has deteriorated and Wolf Creek Public School Division will be obligated to remove it soon. There is no funding allocation from the school division for new playgrounds due to limited budgets and it is up to parents and our community to raise the funds.

After an inspection from a Certified Playground Inspector, it was discovered that the structures at the school and the lake received an average of 32% in relation to CSA compliance and had numerous serious violations including: Fourteen (14) hazards capable of causing life threatening injury or severe disability, eight (8) hazards capable of causing serious injury and temporary disability and ten (10) hazards capable of causing minor injury.

The inspector noted that due to the age of the structures, lack of replacement parts and poor condition of the wood that plans for complete replacement of the structures should be put into place.

Once this project is complete, the community will have safe, new, accessible play structures for all to enjoy regardless of their limitations or disabilities. As well, we will have created an attractive central hub in which our community members will be able to spend time together in a setting that promotes activity without having to leave Alix or spend money to enjoy.

The Alix Community Playgrounds Project will include two areas of construction.

Area I – Alix MAC School: July 2012
Replacement of 2 Play Structures at Alix MAC School
        (1) Kindergarten – Grade 3 structure which will include a preschool element
        (1) Grades 4 - 6 structure

We feel this is the best place to begin due to the benefits to our school population and the accessibility to our community residents as it is located in the centre of our community.

Area II – Alix Lake Recreation Area: July 2012
Replacement of play structure and swings at the Alix Lake Recreation Area

The total cost of the project will be $422,000. Please see the design page for images and budget information.

Any donation given is greatly appreciated, and will be issued a tax receipt if over $20. We encourage you to catch our passion for our community and support something truly worthwhile for our children. Donations given by individual Albertans may be matched by the Community Spirit Program.
